Hidden and underestimated: How children with disabilities are breaking down barriers to attend school April, 7 2017

In West Africa, millions of children don’t complete their primary education and some have never been to school. Humanity & Inclusion (HI) estimates that a third of these children have a disability. Our inclusive education program runs in nine countries[i] in the region and will ensure that 170,000 children have the opportunity to learn, play, make friends and feel valued in society.

Nepal earthquake: inseparable Nirmala and Khendo April, 19 2018

On 25 April 2015, Nepal was hit by a violent earthquake. Hundreds of kilometres apart, Nirmala and Khendo were both buried under the rubble. Rushed to hospital, they each had a leg amputated. This is where they met, attended rehabilitation sessions with HI’s physiotherapists, and learned to walk. Three years on, they are almost never apart and even go to school together. Their dream? To dance again.

A report recently published by HI and IOM[1] offers an assessment of the situation in the Bentiu Protection of Civilians (POC) Site in South Sudan, where people with disabilities live in difficult conditions and humanitarian services struggle to meet their needs. The report makes a number of recommendations.
