HI helped representatives of older people in refugee camps in Kigeme, Rwanda, to organise the International Day of Older Persons on 1 October 2020. Together, they ran awareness campaigns and distributed non-food kits for the most disadvantaged older people. The main theme of the event was: "Pandemics: Do They Change How We Address Age and Ageing?".
More than 26,000 refugees were made aware of the issue and discussed it. HI and its partners reminded humanitarian organisations and members of the community to pay more attention to the needs of older people during the Covid-19 epidemic as a priority
People attending the event adhered to Covid-19 prevention measures such as social distancing and mask-wearing.
